In today’s world, personal safety is a growing concern. Whether walking home at night or navigating unfamiliar environments, many people feel vulnerable and unsure of how to protect themselves. Meanwhile, finding the motivation to stay fit and healthy can feel like a struggle when traditional workouts become repetitive and uninspiring.

Welcome to Kinetic Self Defence

Hey, I’m Adam — founder and head coach at Kinetic Self Defence.
I’ve been training in martial arts for nearly 30 years, and what started as a personal challenge quickly turned into a lifelong obsession.

For me, self-defence is about way more than just techniques — it’s about confidence, fitness, and growing into the strongest version of yourself.

I love what I do because I get to help people surprise themselves — push past limits, learn new skills, and walk a little taller every day.

Whether you’re brand new or building on experience, I’m here to help you level up.
See you on the mats!

Each person’s reason for joining, or background in physical activities varies.  We have members who’ve never really been into exercise before, through to serious athletes.  Something very cool about martial arts, is that they not only give you a physical workout, but also engage your mind.  It’s interesting, social, fun, every class is a little different, no matter how long you’ve trained, there’s always something new.  Overall we find that when people come down and try a class, they’re surprised how much fun it is, so the best thing we can suggest is giving us a call to find out if training at Kinetic Self Defence is right for you.

First you will feel very welcome from the moment you contact us. You will meet a nice group of people who are here with the common goal of helping each other improve. Classes are held in a relaxed, friendly atmosphere with each class running for 90 minutes. Our syllabus offers a broad range of training. As a beginner, your initial steps are in learning to fall and roll correctly, working with correct posture, breathing, movement and learning to defend from punches, kicks, grabs and holds.

As your confidence and ability grows training will include:

  • Practical and effective self-defence techniques against common street attacks, multiple attackers and weapons.
  • Awareness training and body language interpretation and understanding the psychology of a confrontation.
  • Exercises for health, fitness and conditioning with includes comprehensive breathing methods to reduce fear and tension.
  • Methods of striking using all parts of the body along with various restraining and joint lock techniques.

Wear clean, loose-fitting, comfortable clothing that allows freedom of movement such as a T-shirt and shorts or exercise pants. Something you don’t mind getting ripped or stretched. Avoid using clothes with pockets and zippers. Also bring a towel and a bottle of water. For the safety of yourself and fellow students, all jewellery must be removed before training and fingernails/toenails are to be trimmed short. No street shoes are allowed on the mats. Bare feet are recommended. Wrestling shoes are allowed.

Yes, there are likely to be beginners in your class. At Kinetic Self Defence we don’t run classes just for beginners because from experience we know that you will learn faster by training with partner’s who are more experienced than yourself. Beginners learn very little from each other, they learn best feeling and modelling techniques and movements from experienced training partners. Plus, the advanced students are always eager to help you get you on your way.

We like students to train regularly as it is much easier to follow their progress, but how often you train is completely optional. Just remember that martial arts, like any other skill, requires practice and the more you train the quicker you’ll progress. We offer classes 3 days a week with most of our members training about 2-3 times per week.

The rate of progress in martial arts varies greatly but the two major factors that contribute the most are consistency and dedication.

As with most endeavours regular attendance and practice are key to progress. The more frequently you train, the faster you’re likely to progress. Consistency allows you to build upon your skills and develop muscle memory.

Putting in effort during classes and practicing outside of class can accelerate progress. It’s not just about the time spent in class but also about the quality of your training sessions and your commitment to improvement.

Ultimately, progress in martial arts is a personal journey, and comparisons to others should be avoided. Focus on setting achievable goals, celebrating your milestones, and enjoying the journey of self-improvement. With dedication, patience, and perseverance, you’ll continue to progress and grow in your martial arts practice over time.

No, you do not need to be in shape before starting martial arts. In fact, martial arts can be an excellent way to improve your fitness, flexibility, strength, and overall health. Our instructors understand that everyone starts at a different level of fitness and are trained to provide modifications and adaptations to suit individual needs.

Starting martial arts training can be a great way to embark on your fitness journey and improve your physical and mental well-being. As you continue training, you’ll gradually build strength, endurance, and confidence, regardless of your starting point. So, don’t let concerns about fitness hold you back—take that first step and begin your martial arts journey today.
